Recent studies have shown that advertising
is a necessary expenditure for any growing
business. Any company that does not advertise,
is out of luck, and soon out of business.
Competitors are relentless in their pursuit
of the consumer, and the consumers dollars.
That is what business is all about.
Television advertising is effective for
major companies, but even they have learned
that there is a more cost effective way
of advertising, that reaches more potential
consumers than even television can reach,
for example the webstream from Snickers
bars during and right after the 2000 election
in America. And more recently the new
inaction hero's suck up ad here.
Recently the FTC came out with guidelines
on internet advertising, knowing that
it was an ever growing trend. Deceptive
advertising has always been illegal on
any media outlet. But until recently the
internet was wide open to the world which
is not governed by the FTC or any other
agency. This marketing tool was left ungoverned
yet had the potential of reaching the
widest audience of any other media combined.
The equalizing factor of the internet,
is budget, and reasonably priced web sites
that have the potential of reaching a
world wide audience. Anyone can have an
internet site, "without mortgaging
the farm" That is why the FTC felt
it necessary to provide rules governing
the internet in the USA. Of course these
are general guidelines we should all live
by, but whether other countries who are
not under US jurisdiction will adopt them
remains to be seen. |
